Call for applications: Copyright training in Kenya
The GoDown Arts Centre is inviting individuals operating in the creative economy to take part in its annual copyright course titled CopyrightX in Nairobi, Kenya between 2 February and 7 May 2021.
The course is a 12-week programme developed by professor William W Fisher III for the Harvard Law School and explores the current copyright laws in Kenya and the US, the impact of the laws on the arts and entertainment industry, and the ongoing debates concerning how they should be reformed.
Selected participants will meet on Tuesdays from 5.30pm to 8.30pm each week. There will be assignments, and an exam will be held at the end of the sessions. A Harvard certificate will be issued upon successful completion.
“In the creative economy, Intellectual Property (IP) protection is crucial to creating a suitable environment that promotes innovation, research and development,” the art centre’s administration manager Catherine Mujomba told Music In Africa.
“Rapid advancement in technology has accelerated the free and often illegal exchange of IP protected assets. Now more than ever before, creative individuals and businesses need to be well equipped with the necessary information regarding their IP rights. Copyright is one of the IP rights available to creatives.”
She added: “This course provides the students with an opportunity to explore the USA and Kenya’s current copyright law. The knowledge they attain, combined with their experience as practitioners, informs class discussions around the creative and financial impact these laws pose on the economy and them as individuals. The course also gives the students a platform to suggest and debate possible reforms in both countries.”
