Bio
Mohamed Adam (Wd Abbo) – Sudanese Singer, Composer & Cultural Activist
Mohamed Adam, known as Wd Abbo, is a Sudanese singer-songwriter, composer, and cultural activist dedicated to preserving Sudan’s cultural heritage and using music as a tool for peacebuilding, unity, and social change.
Born in Nyala, Darfur, Mohamed has spent over 10 years exploring the rich musical traditions of Sudanese tribes. His work blends traditional and contemporary styles, reviving local languages and dialects while incorporating unique rhythms and indigenous instruments. Through his performances, both at home and abroad, he highlights Sudan’s diverse cultural landscape, emphasizing the role of music and art in fostering peace, social harmony, and national identity.
Nogara: A Cultural Initiative for Peace & Identity
In 2016, Mohamed launched Nogara, a cultural initiative aimed at celebrating diversity and promoting peace in conflict-affected regions such as Darfur, South Kordofan, and Blue Nile. Before the war erupted in April 2023, Nogara operated across Sudan, using music, festivals, documentaries, and creative storytelling to foster social cohesion and cultural preservation. The project plays a crucial role in amplifying the voices of ethnic minority groups, ensuring their identities are reflected and their traditions safeguarded. The annual "Nagara Festival" showcases Sudan’s cultural heritage through documentaries, exhibitions, traditional musical instruments, folk dances, and concerts featuring artists performing in their native languages. This initiative strengthens cultural identity, raises awareness of community rights, and fosters intergenerational communication through music.
Through Nogara, Mohamed has also led initiatives such as:
• “On Darfur Ground” (March 2023): A musical exchange between displaced communities and Nyala city musicians, fostering unity and cultural appreciation.
• Music Heritage Documentation (2019-2023): Recording and archiving the music of tribes such as Beja, Dajo, Berqad, Salamat, and Kenana through five music albums, broadcast on Sudanese national radio.
• Musical Heritage Tour (2021-2022): A cultural exhibition in Nyala (Darfur) and Port Sudan, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, featuring photo exhibits, sound recordings, and traditional instruments.
Artistic Resistance & International Collaborations
Mohamed is a co-founder and lead singer of the Aslaf Band, which modernizes Sudanese musical heritage by fusing traditional and contemporary instruments. He has also been involved in numerous international and regional cultural projects, including:
