Trompies: Kwaito Icons from Soweto
Formed in 1995 in Soweto, Trompies—Spikiri, Mahoota, Donald Duck, Jakarumba, and Mjokes—are pioneers of South African Kwaito. Their debut album, Sigiya Ngengoma, launched them into the spotlight, and they’ve since sold over half a million records.
Rapping in Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana, and Zulu, Trompies use their music to address social issues while celebrating township life, family, and faith. Beyond performing, they run the record label Kalawa Jazmee, helping shape the careers of new artists.
Donald Duck Mthethwa advocates for Kwaito artists’ rights, pushing for fair treatment and industry reforms. Over 25 years later, Trompies remain a powerful force in South African music, blending high-energy performances with cultural pride.
