Opera Africa

Bio

Opera Africa is a Joburg-based opera company who has established a core of full-time choristers and soloists to ensure sustained employment for young artists. Founded in 1994, Opera Africa has been a colourful player on the arts scene for 18 years under the leadership of CEO Sandra de Villiers, pioneering uniquely South African productions in major opera houses. Initially operating as a national touring opera company, presenting mainstage productions such as 'The Magic Flute', 'Faust' and 'Carmen'. Since 2005 Opera Africa has confined its productions to the SA State Theatre in Pretoria and Joburg Theatre as the premier opera company.

The commissioning of new South African works has been a key objective of the company. In 2001 the World Premiere of the opera 'Princess Magogo' by SA composer Mzilikazi Khumalo featured in the Durban Playhouse. Since then it has toured in South Africa, featured at the Ravinia Festival, Chicago, Het Muziektheater, Amsterdam and Den Norske Opera, Oslo. A second commissioned one-act opera, 'Ziyankomo and the Forbidden Fruit' by Phelelani Mnomiya, premiered at the State Theatre with great success. Opera Africa is committed to the training of gifted young artists who benefit from programs and feature in our productions.
