Bio
Hluma Shoko, performing as Not A She (@not_a_she on Instagram), is a dynamic Deep House artist renowned for crafting mesmerizing melodic mixes with a focus on Afro House and Afro Tech. Their DJ journey commenced in March 2022 at Growing OGs, a nonprofit supporting young black artists in townships. April saw them graduate from the Pioneer Pro DJ Course at Bridges for Music Academy, enhancing their skills and expanding their network.
Steeped in a love for early 2000s South African dance music, Hluma's musical journey blossomed from a background in dance to becoming a professional Jam Meister and marimba teacher. Debuting in Cape Town, they performed at iconic venues such as Speyside, Waiting Room, and Old Biscuit Mill, showcasing versatility in sets like Kwaito Nights.
Acknowledged as an emerging talent in the A'Rise by Heineken Creators Campaign and voted Best Newcomer DJ at the Waiting Room's Wammy Awards, Hluma made waves on Bush Radio FM, Cape Town TV, participated in queer-led events, and celebrated their one-year milestone at Rocking the Daisies. The journey continued with notable collaborations, including performances for Puma at their Select Sessions and Hoops on Loop event, Killer Robot, Club Night and Afro Resonance at Modular, and Queer Sunday at Seek, showcasing a diverse range of influences.
The resume includes engagements with renowned brands like Archive, Nike, a digital campaign with Lemkus x New Balance and collaborative ventures with Prime for Boiler Room and A11 Agency. From Unleash The Wolf JHB to ComUnity, Hluma has marked their presence in the industry with dedication and passion, setting the stage for further achievements in their flourishing career. The fast rising star, is on track with their dream to be an international festival DJ, recently debuting at Wolfkop Weekender and AfrikaBurn '24. This year marked aa momentus occasion with a personal cosign from Joe Kay and featuring at their recent Soulection & Friends event in Cape Town and the DJ also performed at the Kaytranada Showcase, at the Old Biscuit Mill - a full circle moment.
