Matt Maralack

Bio

Matt Maralack is a BA (Hons) Music and Musicology graduate from Rhodes University with several years of experience in the fields of ethnomusicology, sound technology, music performance and music education.

Though still active on stage and in studio, he has since taken a primary interest in arts and culture’s intersection with society from a leadership and governance perspective.

To this end, Matt completed an MA in Cultural Policy and Management from Wits University conferred in 2019. Here, he demonstrates a unique understanding of the challenges facing South African cultural policy development on both the national and local levels, and the relationship that this has with economic development. Matt is currently employed at African Leadership Academy (ALA) in Johannesburg as Sector Lead for the AL for the Arts Network, a community of ALA creative arts alumni where he finds his passion for the cultural sector currently intersecting with youth development on the African continent. Alongside this, Matt loves having deep and meaningful conversations about life and current affairs, but hates the inevitable stomach cramps from laughing too hard at witty puns.
