Kitso Seti
Bio
Kitso Seti is a Cape Town-based musician, writer, and performer whose sound is grounded in
the raw, street-born energy of Spaza music. Emerging from Khayelitsha, Seti’s early exposure
to hip-hop, poetry, and township storytelling laid the foundation for an artistic voice that is
both sharp-edged and deeply observant. Spaza didn’t just shape his music, it shaped his
worldview, informing a practice that values urgency, honesty, and experimentation that is
geared towards societal change.
Now building on that foundation, Seti draws influence from spoken word and jazz
improvisation and instrumentation, using these elements to push his sound in new directions.
His music resists easy classification, blending spoken word, live instrumentation, and urban
rhythm into a style that is unmistakably his own.
In 2018, Seti released his first mixtape, eKhayelitsha, which looks at the love and hate of the
township. It is a reflection of township life attributed to the extensive hand of colonialism. He
then released an EP in 2020 titled Lot’s Wife: The Curse of Hoza and Ngxobongwana, a
project that aims to understand what Blackness entails in the post-apartheid moment of South
Africa.
Seti has performed on a range of stages across the country, sharing platforms with leading
voices such as Makhafula Vilakazi, Sabelo Soko, iPhupho L’ka Biko, Tankiso Mamabolo,
Internet Athi, Ndlulamthi, and Enkosi Simelane, to mention a few. These collaborations and
appearances have built strong anticipation around his forthcoming debut album, which
promises to extend his reputation as one of the most exciting voices in South Africa’s music
scene.
With recent performances building hype and setting the tone for the album’s release, Kitso
Seti stands poised at the edge of a new chapter - one where his sound continues to evolve, but
always returns to the streets, communities and families that raised him.
