Hoko Roro

Bio

Hoko Roro was formed by talented singer, songwriter and dancer, Samuel Hokororo. Samuel was born in 1990 in Temeke District, Dar es Salaam, and started singing at a young age. In 2006 Samuel went to the Dogodogo center – a center for street children – and received training in theatre, dance and music. It was there that he learned to play the guitar.

Since leaving the center in 2008 he has been working full time in music, dance and theatre. In 2011 his star started shining when he was selected as a dancer to participate at Visa2Dance festival. In the same year he went to perform in Uganda and Germany with the Lumumba Theatre Group, where he also received more training. In 2012 he went to study for a year at the Dhow Country Music Academy (DCMA) in Zanzibar, but due to financial constraints he was forced to move back to Dar es Salaam to continue his daily music activities.

In 2013 he established his own band, named Hoko Roro, with well-known Tanzanian percussionist Mohamed Twaba and Ilali Mohamed, a Calabash player and singer, with Samuel on guitar and lead vocals.
