Godessa
Bio
Godessa are celebrated as one of South Africa’s most groundbreaking and influential female hip hop groups, emerging from Cape Town in 2000 at a time when women’s voices in African hip hop were still vastly underrepresented. Comprised of Shameema “Shame” Williams, Eloise “EJ Von Lyrik” Jones and Bernadette “Burni Aman” Amansure, the trio quickly established themselves through fearless lyricism, socially conscious storytelling and an unapologetic feminist perspective that challenged both industry norms and societal expectations. Their debut single “Social Ills,” released in 2002, gained international traction with playlist support across South Africa, the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic, while also receiving a special 12-inch vinyl release through Belgium’s Lowlands Distribution. Renowned for their electrifying stage presence and politically charged performances, Godessa built a reputation that carried them from local stages in Johannesburg and Cape Town to international audiences in Havana, Switzerland, France and New Jersey. In 2004, the group released their critically acclaimed debut album Spillage through their own independent imprint, High Voltage, further cementing their place as pioneers of conscious South African hip hop and independent African music culture. Although the trio eventually stopped releasing music collectively, each member continued to shape the creative landscape through solo work and cultural activism. EJ Von Lyrik released her solo album Method in the Madness in 2007, Burni Aman followed with Sweet Science in 2015, while Shameema expanded into artist management and public relations, notably working with acclaimed Cape Town trip-hop outfit Dookoom. Through their artistry, activism and uncompromising authenticity, Godessa remain widely respected as trailblazers who opened doors for future generations of women in African hip hop.
