Ghxst
Bio
Ghxst is a Johannesburg East–based South African artist and creative professional who is carving a distinctive space in the country’s hip-hop and underground scenes. Working both behind the scenes and on camera, he is also the curator and host of the industry-focused podcast InFamous Status, where he spotlights emerging and established voices in music and culture.
Surrounded by music from an early age, Ghxst’s creative expression began with visual art — sketching and painting — before evolving into poetry and written self-expression. This natural progression led him to teach himself how to rap, develop flows and experiment with melody, resulting in a multidimensional and emotionally driven sound rooted in culture and personal experience.
His musical journey gained momentum in 2016, through high school freestyle sessions with peers. In 2018, this energy formalised into the creative collective LunchtimeWorldWide, which remained active in the hip-hop scene from 2019 to early 2022. The group released their debut EP, Take My Heart, in 2019 across SoundCloud and other digital streaming platforms. The project attracted notable attention, earning several social media competition wins and securing four headline performances at The Sands in Sandton, alongside various other appearances around Johannesburg’s hip-hop and club circuit.
In 2021, Ghxst released a joint EP with LunchtimeWorldWide member Beny.Kid, titled Everyday Memories. The project further defined his artistic direction and highlighted his versatility as both a performer and collaborator.
Following a record deal setback in 2020 and the eventual disbandment of the group, Ghxst chose to expand his technical knowledge of the industry. He completed a Diploma in Sound Engineering at the Emedy Multimedia Institute in Hatfield, Pretoria. Since then, he has worked behind the scenes on major projects with artists such as Lord Script, PhantomSteeze, Khandakhulu, Vegeta, TankTheRockstar and WTF_AUXCABLE — artists affiliated with major record labels. Through this work, he has strengthened his professional network while continuing to refine his sound and artistic vision.
While grounded in hip-hop and urban culture, Ghxst has expanded into techno, house and dance music, further cementing his versatility across genres. Alongside his work as an artist, he also serves as an artist and PR manager, mixing and mastering engineer, and contributes to artist development as an A&R, supporting the growth and strategic direction of emerging talent.
His name, “Ghxst” — meaning “problem” in isiZulu — reflects his disruptive creative energy and deep spiritual identity beyond its literal translation.
Now preparing for his official solo debut, Ghxst represents a new wave of intentional, mysterious and impactful artistry in the South African music industry, with a vision of bridging diverse South African cultures through sound.
