Eyethu Soweto Music Project

The Eyethu project has been running since 1995, and many of their original learners have become student teachers and advanced performers in the orchestras. Students living in Soweto and surrounding areas who have had beginner group tuition and reach the required standard are identified and invited to continue their music education at Eyethu. This project provides music instruction to children each Saturday during state school terms at the Bapedi Arts Centre in Meadowlands. After an initial period of up to a year in the Advanced Recorder group, learners begin individual tuition on an orchestral instrument. Exceptional learners may be entered into Royal Schools practical examinations. The project is managed by the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company.
