The album continues themes first introduced in Mkabayi The Album, which paid tribute to Qwana’s late mother, named after the Zulu princess Mkabayi ka Jama. Umkabayi Legacy expands on that narrative, exploring resilience, ancestry and intergenerational ties.
Musically, the project combines traditional African rhythms with modern Afro-pop, while incorporating gospel, maskandi and amapiano influences. The album addresses subjects including fatherhood, loss, healing and cultural heritage.
The release features a number of collaborators from across Southern Africa, including Mnqobi Yazo, Shwi, Inkosi Yamagcokama, Mzukulu, Luve Maganga Thishela, Mjolisi, Maraza, Imac Soul, Molly M, Azanti, Lington and Dr Mavibes. Contributions also include vocals by Makhosi and Star Healer.
Qwana has described the project as a continuation of the personal and cultural themes he began with Mkabayi The Album, while also positioning the new work as a statement on preserving and celebrating stories rooted in Zulu identity and wider African traditions.
