Darius L. Thieme Collection

Bio

The darius L. Thieme Collection is a collection of recorded music archives that features 30 ten inch tapes of instrumental music and songs recorded in 1964-66 by Darius L. Thieme in Western Nigeria. The collection features performances by Abeokuta, Ado Awaiye, Ajagase, Ara, Ede, Ejigba, Gbamgbola, Ibadan, Ida, Ife, Igangan, Ijebu-Ode, Illebo, Imini, Iseyin, Isundunrin, Iwo, Lalupan, Lanlate, Mowolowo, Ogbomosho, Ogburo, Ogo, Oyo, and Sukeeru performers. It includes a 28 page concordance, a newspaper clipping, and nine pages of notes.

It also includes Yoruba traditional music that was recorded in central Nigeria from 1964 to1967 in places such as Ibadan, Oyo, Ife, Abeokta, Iseyin, and Ogbomosho. The collection is in Yoruba Language and also features 152 sound tape reels which include drum ensembles and solo song.

The collection featured some oral traditions collected from Yoruba musicians in western Nigeria in 1964-66. These relate mainly to the origins of their musical instruments.
