The North is African, South is South African Jazz, East is Mbaqanga and Soul is the West on BongiweThaSong’s musical compass. She binds her audience with her voice and straps them in with her words, taking them on an exhilarating and unquestionably memorable journey.
From a young age, BongiweThaSong has always been inexplicably drawn not only to music, but to singing, and the creation of music itself Her memories and stories are brought to life by the sounds of the Collection of CDs that her Dad would blast on an easy chilled Sunday, By the ear worm that sneakily plays after a choir rehearsal at school, and new harmonies from the Church choir haunting her all week. With all this music surrounding her, it managed to find a way to her heart. BongiweThaSong’s inception is from where the sun rises, The East. Originally from the East Rand, a place of such top tier talent, BongiweThaSong is intrigued, inspired and moved after witnessing an electrifying performance of the The BLK Brother, a collab between the well renown BLK JKS and The Brother Moves On, she went home a changed person. passion burning inside of her she decided to pursue an outlet, this decision lead her to cross paths with her friend, Poet Angela Mthembu and developed a sisterhood that later formed the band known as PG13. Years of experience mentally, physically and emotionally collected through working with the collective, she was able to transcribe her voice, sound and message as a solo artist.
BongiweThaSong has graced the stages of Soweto Theatre, Joburg Theatre, The PE Opera house, The Goodman Gallery, The Orbit, Sawubona Music Jam, Smoking Dragon Festival, Bassline and National Arts Festival. She has had the opportunity to share stages with the likes of The Brother Moves On, Msaki, Urban Village, Musa Zwane Music, Shameless Band SA, Oddball, Nomisupasta Mazwai, Nosisi(Kwane Experience) and Simphiwe Dana. BongiNgomaTheSong’s vocals have been included on a Pampers Lullaby which was aired on South African National TV, Kenyan and Tanzanian National TV.
Inspired and influenced by Simphiwe Dana, Thandiswa Mazwai, Siya Makuzeni, Samthing Soweto, Busi Mhlongo, Miriam Makeba, Madosini and Imithente, they became the tools and mediums that combined to birth the new, beautiful and powerful moving voice of BongiNgomaTheSong. Such influences gravitated BongiNgoma’s voice towards a Strong War Cry African vocal, with an embellishment of soul, and highlights sensual notes.
BongiweThaSong believes, so long as you are a living being, music will impact a person one way or another. Her intention is to make thought provoking music that not only moves people, but lands comfortably and deliciously to her audience’s musical palate. She not only wants to inspire and communicate with her voice and music, she is on a mission to form a meaningful connection, that it creates a ripple effect transcending beyond her audience.
