Bio

Based in New York, U.S., Belfer Audio Archive is one of the largest sound archives in the country. Its cylinder and 78rpm recordings are catalogued in Classic Catalogue at the Syracuse University Libraries' online catalogue. It has a collection of about 100 000 10 and 12-inch 78 rpm recordings, 11,000 cylinders and 600 specialized discographies, books, and periodicals online and a collection of 200,000 items that are not online but can be searched upon request. They are 10,000 cylinders, 20,000 discs, 40,000 45 rpms, numerous digital audio tapes, wires, and 20,000 tape reels and cassettes.

The Belfer Audio Archive’s focus has been popular vocal and instrumental music on cylinders and in 78 rpm formats. Their content has musical genres as well as non-musical events. Music genres represented in the archive include classical, jazz, popular, marches and patriotic, novelty, folk, country, rock, ethnic from various African countries and experimental genres.

The archive is open to members of the public from Monday to Friday at 09h00am until 17h00pm.
