Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness (BCUC)

Bio

Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness (BCUC) is a South African music outfit made up of seven musicians from Soweto, Johannesburg. BCUC moves the audience both physically and emotionally with a sound derived straight from their ancestral lineage. The group demystifies the general worldviews about modern Africa. The basic elements of the unmistakable BCUC sound are abstract congas from Cheex, with Lerato playing a moody, bipolar rocking guitar, laced on top by the ragged rawness of Jovi’s unpretentious vocals, Luja on the bass drum delivering flowing boom bap raps, Hloni’s funky howling ad-libs accompanied by whistles and nose-flutes, all sweetened with Kgomotso’s clear vocals and tambourine. These ingredients are stirred till a chant of ecstasy and euphoria.

They take the audiences along on an epic journey, sharing their controversial yet interesting views of modern Africa. The Africa portrayed by BCUC is not poor, but rich in tradition, rituals and beliefs. Highlights of their musical journey are performances at Gentse Feesten (Belgium), Festival Mundial Tilburg, Melkweg Amsterdam (Netherlands), Into The Great Wide Open (Netherlands), Mieliepop Festival (South Africa) and Brickfield Music Festival (South Africa).

BCUC was selected as one of the finalists of crowd funding initiative Africa Unsigned by a panel that included Tony Allen (drummer Fela Kuti) among others. They reached out to their fans to support their next recording through The Africa Unsigned website. In 2011 BCUC reached their target and recorded an EP 'Can’t Cool Can’t Quench'. The EP was released in 2012 on various online music platforms. They shot two music videos with Belgian filmmaker Christopher Daley in Soweto. The first was for ‘Vumani’, which is on their first self-titled EP BCUC, as well as short skits of ‘Journey’ and ‘Yinde Indlela’. They continue to perform regularly at home and abroad.
