Bio
Avante is a legendary, award-winning South African gospel music group celebrated for its rich vocal harmonies, inspirational lyrics, and lasting contribution to the African gospel music landscape. Originating from KwaMashu in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, the group has remained a respected name in gospel music since its formation in 1997, touching audiences across South Africa and beyond with its powerful message of faith, hope, and perseverance.
Renowned for timeless gospel classics such as Qina (Mzalwane Qina) and Yeki Jerusalema, Avante established a distinctive sound that seamlessly blends traditional African gospel influences with contemporary gospel elements. Their unique male vocal harmony style has inspired generations of gospel artists and helped shape the KwaZulu-Natal gospel music scene.
Founded by Lucky Cele, James Langa, Linda Gcwensa, Bongani Ngcobo, and Sphiwe Khanyile, Avante debuted with their acclaimed album Sinethemba in 1997. The project introduced audiences to the group's exceptional vocal ability and heartfelt ministry, laying the foundation for a remarkable career spanning nearly three decades.
Throughout their journey, Avante has released several successful gospel projects, including Sinethemba (1997), Eloyi (1999), Uhambo (2016), and Eqalwe Nguwe. Their music continues to resonate with listeners through messages of spiritual encouragement, resilience, and devotion.
The group faced significant challenges between 2011 and 2019 with the passing of founding members Linda Gcwensa, Bongani Ngcobo, and Sphiwe Khanyile. Determined to preserve the legacy and vision of Avante, surviving founders Lucky Cele and James Langa temporarily stepped away from the spotlight to recruit and mentor a new generation of members. Their dedication resulted in a successful return to recording and live performances, ensuring that the Avante legacy continues to thrive.
Over the years, Avante has enjoyed extensive exposure on major South African media platforms, including SABC gospel programming and leading radio stations such as Ukhozi FM. Their enduring popularity has earned them a loyal fan base and recognition as one of South Africa's most influential gospel groups.
Today, Avante continues to inspire audiences through new music releases, including recent studio projects and EPs, while actively performing at gospel festivals, church gatherings, and community events. Their continued success stands as a testament to the timeless appeal of their music and their unwavering commitment to spreading the gospel through song.
