Access Music Project

Bio

Access Music Project (AMP) is a music education centre serving children at the historically disadvantaged schools in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown); Established in 2011 it is currently the only means by which musically talented youth in these schools have access to formal music studies. Our vision is for South Africa’s youth to have equal ACCESS to music education, creative industry, cultural heritage and artistic possibilities.

We teach practical music, ensembleship, music literacy, music theory, general music knowledge and sound technology to provide learners with a solid foundation and formal certificates that enable access to further music study and career pathways. Our interconnected model runs from primary school through to post-school level. We work with all genres of music but we believe that it is important to build on our own rich musical heritage, and that this heritage forms part of our young learners' musical journeys. Through our 'Play Mzansi' project, we are developing pedagogical sheet music resources for young learners based on iconic South African songs that are drawn from traditional roots, and delivered through an interactive app.
