Kida Kudz honours 2Pac with Makaveli single
British-Nigerian artist Kida Kudz has released the video for ‘Makaveli’, a tribute to late US rapper 2Pac. The song is available on major digital platforms.
‘Makaveli’, released in commemoration of what would have been the New York native born Tupac Amaru Shakur’s 50th birthday on 16 June, is the third single off Kida Kudz’s forthcoming Top Memba mixtape due on 9 July. The 10-tracker guests Fela Kuti's grandson Made Kuti, Bella Shmurda, among others.
The attending video for ‘Makaveli’ references 2Pac’s ‘Hit ’Em Up (Dirty)’ video, Nick Broomfield’s Biggie & Tupac documentary, as well as 2Pac’s iconic 1996 New York Times cover alongside colleague Snoop Dogg and label executive Suge Knight and his appearance in the 1992 film Juice.
Kida Kudz said ‘Makaveli’, which was recorded at his home, discusses his approach to life, which he reveals is heavily inspired by Tupac’s spirit and attitude.
“Makaveli was shot by my friend Visionnaire Pictures,” Kida Kudz added. “The idea came from both of us putting our heads together to think of the best 2Pac images and recreate them on a budget in the studio. I styled myself using vintage pieces and a lot of clothes I already owned as I love 90’s fashion…The thought was to bring 2Pac back to life, trying to get it as close as possible.”
Kida Kudz, who has been associated with the likes of Pa Salieu, Juls and Burna Boy, was born in Ibadan, Nigeria and move to London when he was 14. Aside from 2Pac, Kida Kudz also cites Lil Wayne, DMX, Fela Kuti, Haruno Ishola, 2Baba and Ebenezer Obey among his most vital influences.
His other recent releases, which fall under his self-styled Afro-jiggy sound, include ‘Animalistic’, which explores incarceration and the Bella Shmurda-assisted ‘Ball Till We Fall’, which listens as a fusion of euphoric house and dancehall.
