US band Mad Noise to play the Gambia
The US embassy in the Gambia will on Monday 14 December welcome Mad Noise, a group based in the North American country. The visit to the Gambia is part of an exchange programme sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Mad Noise’s arrival is the start of a weeklong music project and a component of the American Music Abroad programme. The project includes Mad Noise concerts at the Ebunjan Theatre in Banjul and at Jarra Somma on consecutive days (16 and 17). Mad Noise, whose sound has been described as ‘everything from acoustic neo-soul street-funk to punk-blues’, will be playing both concerts for free to the public.
The project also includes a workshop on entrepreneurship for local musicians. Added to the concert and workshop, is a visit by the band to the Gambia Senior Secondary School in capital Banjul.
According to US embassy in the Gambia, organisers of the project: “These concerts with Gambian artists are important platforms for the exchange of ideas and experiences, leading to a better appreciation of each other’s musical genre and the broader cultural context.
“It is our strong conviction that this entire project will greatly enhance diversity and foster entrepreneurship and economic progress of Gambian musicians. The robust interactions and networking that will ensue among the Gambian and U.S. musicians have the potential to build long-lasting professional relationships for the future development of the local artists and the music scene overall.”
Prior to the events lined up for the visitimg band, a news conference is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 15 December. The Embassy’s Music Entrepreneurship Workshop for over 30 Gambian musicians will take place on the same day.
