Musicians Union of Ghana President to hand over in 2019
President of the President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bice Osei Kuffuor, would leave the position in June 2019.
Popularly known as Obour, Kuffour has served two terms, each coming with controversies the former recording act has weathered.
The announcement came at MUSIGA's Biennial Conference which was held in Cape Coast. The conference was held under the theme, Building a Vibrant Union for National Development, and took place with the central regional minister Kwamena Duncan as the Guest of Honour.
The conference was supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Ghana Culture Forum (GCF), Creative Arts Council and Samrit Hotel.
At the event, Duncan said the Ghanaian government is willing to support the union’s plans for musicians in the country. He added that musicians need to continue to affect Ghanaians by making songs that empower their fellow citizens.
Speaking about notable events to take place in the future, the union’s general secretary, Deborah Freeman, said regional elections into key positions will be held on 25 October 2019.
Kuffour called for the authorities to bring back music education in schools so as to engage recording musicians with a capacity for teaching. He also asked that the Ghanaian government make take the KPMG Comprehensive Study on the Music Sector as an important part of interventions going forward.
Deputy Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Joshua Ansah, said the informal sector of the economy has a huge impact on national development and musicians play a crucial in it. He noted that since MUSIGA is a member of the Union of Informal Workers Association (UNIWA) which is affiliated to the TUC, it will benefit from the support provided by the TUC.
In attendance were MUSIGA regional executives from all over the country as well as Dorothy Habadah, an attorney from the Copyright Office.
