Originally released in 2005, the album signalled Chonguiça’s emergence as a prominent figure in African jazz, blending Mozambican rhythmic traditions with contemporary jazz influences. The project established his distinctive musical approach, characterised by collaboration, innovation and a strong connection to cultural heritage.
The anniversary vinyl edition has been pressed on 180-gram vinyl by Handle with Care in Germany. It includes newly remastered tracks and liner notes that reflect on Chonguiça’s early musical development and the evolution of his sound. The release coincides with Mozambique’s 50th anniversary of independence.
The upcoming concert will feature members of Chonguiça’s original Cape Town-based Moreira Project alongside his current ensemble. The performance aims to bring together different generations of musicians associated with his career.
Chonguiça, who studied at the University of Cape Town, has performed internationally and collaborated with artists including Manu Dibango, Hugh Masekela and Najee. He also leads initiatives such as the Moreira Chonguiça Foundation, the More Jazz Series and the African Jazz Network, which focus on youth development and cultural exchange.
