South African Cultural Observatory

Bio

Initiated by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture through the Mzansi Golden Economy Strategy (2011), SACO is a statistical and socioeconomic research project launched in 2014 that examines South Africa’s CCIs, and arts, culture and heritage sectors.

It uses use a range of innovative statistical methodologies, audits and research tools to understand the creative economy. Its main purpose is the development of a comprehensive cultural information system that continuously captures cultural data and monitors and evaluates government initiatives in the ACH sectors and CCIs.
