National Museum of Gitega

Bio

Located in Gitega (formerly Kitega), Burundi, the National Museum of Gitega hosts some of the best archival information about the history of Burundi. Founded in 1955, the museum is well-known for holding a wide range of artefacts from Kingdom drums, house items, traditional arts, dance and music instruments. Other collections include ancient Burundian clothes, jewels, kitchen material, welding fans, weapons, baskets and calabashes. The drum sanctuary also contains ancient drum making tools where drum makers and dancers demonstrate how to construct the drums, learn the songs and perform drum exhibitions for visitors.
