National Museum (Ethiopia)

Bio

Founded in 1936 in Addis Ababa, National Museum is an institute well-known for displaying ceremonial costumes donated by the royal family. It grew from the establishment of the Institute of Archaeology, founded in 1958. It was established by French archaeologists with the thrust of promoting and facilitating the archaeological research mission in the northern part of Ethiopia.

With the establishment of the Ethiopian Cultural Heritage Administration in 1976, an idea to open a National Museum came up, and was supported by the Government.

The museum has diversified its activities since its establishment and is now organised into three departments namely the conservation department, the documentation department and the exhibition and research department.
On the top floor is the secular arts and crafts collection which includes traditional clothing, weapons, jewellery, utensils and music instruments.

The paleontology exhibit on the basement level contains fossilized evidence of extinct creatures, such as the sabre-toothed feline Homotherium and the gargantuan savannah pig Notochoerus.

The museum is open to members of the public from Tuesday to Sunday at 09h00am until 12h00pm and at 14h00 until 17h00.
