Bio

Born in 2000, in The Gambia, MusaFilly Jobarteh is an instrumentalist and Afro-manding artist who was raised in a griot family. His father Ebrima Jobarteh was Gambia's leading Djimbe exporter, musician and promoter. His mother Tuti Adama Suso is also from a griot family. Young Musa began playing the Djimbe when he was three years old. His first performance was when he was five years old in 2005 alongside his father at a World Music Day at Alliance Franco in The Gambia. In addition, he also studied the Mandinka traditional drum called the Serubaa, the Senegalese Sabar and Jola Bokarabo.

His music career grew and saw him becoming a lead Djimbe player for his father's Kambeng Band. The band is renowned for regularly performing in The Gambia and working with numerous local bands. When he was seven years old, he was invited to play with one of the most renowned Senegalese Bugurabu player Bakary Olay.

In 2009, one of the country’s largest drinks company Youki invited him to tour around schools in the urban areas where he demonstrated the Djimbe to students. In 2010, he toured Mali with his father. While in that country, he performed with kora maestro Toumani Diabate and his ensemble. He also did his first recording single with Toumani's son Sidiki Diabaté entitled ‘Saliya’.

In addition to playing instruments he began singing in 2012 and released his debut album entitled ‘Allah Tentou’ (Thank God). The project featured Djimbe, Kora Doundoun and Balafong.

In 2013, he won the Best Instrumentalist category and came out second in the overall gala organized by Gambia's Got Talent. In 2014, he represented his country in Holland where he reportedly performed for an estimated one million people.

Apart from playing instruments and singing, Musa also teaches Djimbe at Marina International School and the Gambia French School.
