Mbira Centre

Bio

The Mbira Centre is an institute in Zimbabwe that creates mbira and related products, including handmade chromatic mbiras, handmade traditional mbiras and resonators. The centre is also into production of writing, film and music ideas and products. It is headed by Albert Chimedza who has often challenged the corporate sector to promote traditional music in schools as a way of cultivating future generations that appreciate local culture.

In February 2014, the centre initiated the ‘Mbira in Schools’ project in partnership with the Culture Fund and European Union Programme for Arts and Culture Development.On 27 February 2015, the project was officially launched at the Mbira Centre . The initiative is part of the organisations' aim to stimulate and preserve the traditional instrument and impart the knowledge of the instrument to generations to come. The project has roped in more than 30 schools from different parts of the country. The center employs 15 people, some of them physically challenged, and produces at least 100 mbiras a week.
