Kuru San Dance Festival

Bio

Founded in 1997, the Kuru San Dance Festival is a unique three-day celebration event that takes place every August on the only Bushman-owned game farm in Botswana known as the Dqae game farm. The Dqae Game Farm lies in the Kalahari Desert close to D’Kar and comes alive with traditional dance and music for three days. The festival celebrates the traditional dance style of Botswana’s first people, who are referred to as Basarwa, San or Bushmen. The Basarwa were pushed out into the Kalahari Desert by settlements and animal preservations. By institutionalizing the practice of traditional dance in the form of an annual festival, the Kuru Cultural Center has attempted to give the San people an opportunity to display their cultural heritage.

The festival features San dance groups from Botswana and Namibia. The event is a unique cultural experience, allowing all people to share in the rich culture and beautiful traditional dances and music of the San People.
