The Kenya Conservatoire of Music

Bio

This not-for-profit conservatoire was founded in 1944 as the East Africa Conservatoire of Music. Lessons are given at the conservatoire building as well as at various schools that the conservatoire teachers visit weekly. There is a second campus in South Nairobi, at The GoDown Arts Centre. Students are encouraged to sit for the grade examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in London, UK, as well as for the LRSM (Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music) and the Advanced Certificate.

There is a small orchestra, but numbers are restricted owing to the lack of instruments.Programme detail: Diploma programs -- Offered in performance (Western classical, jazz/pop, piano accompaniment), choral conducting, music history, ethnomusicology, aural skills, theory, pedagogy (piano, strings), music technology, musical theatre. Certificate programs -- Offered in piano accompaniment, pedagogy (piano, strings), music technology.

Tuition on traditional instruments and in traditional styles is available for those requesting it but no diplomas or certificates are awarded in traditional music.
