Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (Gram Library)

Bio

The Gram Library of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (G.B.C.) has arguably one of the largest archival collections in Africa. It contains thousands of gramophone records, cassettes, and CDs from Ghanaian and international recording companies which date back to the 1940s. In 1958, the library moved into the Broadcasting House.

In October 2008, a project to “Digitize, Archive and Safeguard the Gramophone Library of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation” was launched. The project is a joint venture between G.B.C. and The Center for World Music at the University of Hildesheim in Germany.

Around 1978, the library had increased its collection to about 56 000 records which included transcription records and effects. Some of the records were reel to reel tapes.

The library has a SQL database that contains all digitized songs and discography information. The databases are continually being updated for the library's CD and cassette collection and currently only has over 2000 CDs captured and over 1000 cassettes. The archive also collects sound recordings of political speeches.
In 1960, the library had a collection of about 38 000 records, classified into three categories namely commercial, processed and soft recordings in three speeds – 33, 45 and 78 r.p.ms and the monthly intake around that time was about 300.
