The three-month programme, run by live music platform Bassline, will select 10 participants for an intensive combination of classroom learning and practical industry exposure. The initiative was launched in 2024 through a partnership between Bassline and the French Institute of South Africa, and enters its third year in 2026 with expanded institutional support.
The latest edition is delivered in partnership with the National Arts Council (NAC) and the Music In Africa Foundation’s NEFCISA programme. The organisers say the collaboration is intended to strengthen skills development and professional pathways within South Africa’s live music sector.
Applications close on 15 February 2026, or once 100 applications have been received.
Programme structure
The Live Music Lab combines 60 hours of classroom-based training with hands-on work across major live music events and industry platforms in Johannesburg. Classroom sessions run from 2 March to 30 March 2026, followed by practical placements from the end of March through June.
Participants will gain experience by working on several established music projects, including the Rhythmic Clash series in April, Bassline’s artist management operations between April and June, the Africa Rising Music Conference in May, Bassline Fest in May, and Fête de la Musique in June.
According to the organisers, the programme is designed to move beyond theoretical instruction and expose participants directly to the operational realities of live music production.
Eligibility
The call is open to unemployed Johannesburg-based residents aged between 18 and 25. Applicants must hold a matric certificate and demonstrate an interest in the creative industries, particularly live music. The programme targets individuals seeking skills in areas such as event management, concert promotion, stage and backstage operations, marketing, artist management and technical production.
Training focus
Participants will receive an introduction to South Africa’s live music ecosystem, including its development, career pathways and professional networks. Training will then shift to specialised modules aligned with each participant’s strengths and interests.
These modules may include concert promotion, artist management, technical production, stage and backstage management, artist wellness, and the history of South African music. Learners will be mentored by experienced professionals and may shadow industry practitioners in the lead-up to and during live events.
Application process
Applicants are required to submit a written motivation of up to 350 words and a short video pitch of no more than two minutes. Supporting documents, including certified copies of an identity document and matric certificate, must also be provided.
Applications must be completed online via this official application form.
