Congolese musician Fally Ipupa has made history after his latest album XX debuted at number one on the French Top Albums chart, becoming the first African artist to reach the top position in its opening week.
The achievement marks a significant milestone in the artist’s international career and further cements his influence within the Francophone music market, while also reflecting the growing global reach of African music.
A central figure in the project is South African artist and producer TRESOR, who contributed as executive producer, creative director, songwriter, producer and featured artist. His involvement was key in shaping the album’s overall sound and direction.
The album was developed across several cities, including Johannesburg, Paris, Los Angeles and Kinshasa, reflecting a cross-continental production process. It blends elements of Congolese music with contemporary global influences.
Tracks such as ‘Alifa Jam’ featuring Wizkid, and ‘Isoler’ form part of the project’s international rollout, contributing to its commercial performance and chart success in France.
“This album was about shaping a new future for Congolese music while keeping its roots intact,” TRESOR said.
The production team also included contributions from Jacquel Entertainment Group, with Batundi and Rudolph Willemse involved in the project’s development.
The release coincides with Fally Ipupa’s recent stadium performances in Paris, adding to the visibility of the album during its launch period. Industry observers have noted that the combined impact of touring and streaming performance has contributed to its strong commercial debut.
The success of XX has been viewed within the industry as part of a broader shift in the international positioning of African music, with increased visibility on major global charts and streaming platforms.
The number one debut represents a career milestone for Fally Ipupa and a notable achievement for the African music industry in one of Europe’s most competitive markets.
