Warner Music Group, Netflix agree multi-year documentary deal
Warner Music Group and Netflix have entered into an exclusive multi-year first-look agreement to develop documentary films and series about Warner artists and songwriters.
Netflix vice-president of documentary films and series Adam Del Deo.
The partnership will focus on long-form productions exploring the lives and music of both established and contemporary acts signed to Warner Music Group. The company said the projects would be developed in collaboration with the artists involved or, where relevant, their estates.
As part of the arrangement, Warner Music Group is also working with Unigram, the production company run by Amanda Ghost and Gregor Cameron, which will serve as the production arm for the label’s long-form programming.
Robert Kyncl, chief executive of Warner Music Group, said the deal was intended to broaden the reach of the company’s artists through Netflix’s international platform.
“The combination of Warner Music Group’s IP with Netflix’s global reach is an incredible opportunity to introduce new fans to our artists and songwriters all around the world,” he said.
Netflix vice-president of documentary films and series Adam Del Deo, said the company was looking to expand its music-related programming through the agreement.
“We’ve seen how music inspired incredible fandom on Netflix so we’re excited to partner with Warner Music Group and the best-in-class artists they work with to bring even more indelible music storytelling to our members,” he said.
The agreement comes as music companies and streaming platforms increasingly invest in exclusive film and television projects linked to popular catalogues and artists. Music documentaries and concert films have become a growing part of competition among major platforms seeking to attract and retain subscribers.
Netflix already has several music-focused titles in its catalogue, while rival services including Disney+ and HBO Max have also expanded their slate of music documentaries and related programming.
Although financial terms of the Warner-Netflix agreement were not disclosed, the deal signals continued interest from both the music and streaming industries in turning artist stories and music rights into screen content for global audiences.
