Directed by James Ngcobo, with musical direction by Margaret Motsage and choreography by Lulu Mlangeni, the production traces the history of Motown from its origins in Detroit’s Hitsville, U.S.A., to its lasting influence on contemporary music. It highlights the contributions of visionary songwriters and performers who helped define genres such as soul and R&B.
“Motown is more than music; it’s a movement, a memory, and a mirror of our history. With this production, we honour that legacy and bring its timeless spirit to life on our stage,” Ngcobo said.
The show features songs that reflect both personal and collective experiences, including love, hope, resilience, and aspiration. According to performer Lerato Mvelase, the production offers a “liberating” experience and serves as a “masterclass in collaboration and precision.”
The cast includes Lerato Mvelase, Tamara Dey, Liesl Penniken, Hlengiwe Pearl, and Anele Precious Mthethwa. The live band features Earl Joseph Baartman on bass, Urbano Bay Nobela on guitar, and Tshepa Diale on drums.
An Ode to Motown aims to provide audiences with an immersive celebration of musical history while honouring the cultural impact of Motown and its enduring relevance in the 21st century.
