Spotify launches ‘The Blend Date’ with Kenyan creator Kevin Maina
Spotify has launched a new short-form series in Kenya, titled The Blend Date, in collaboration with digital creator Kevin Maina, also known as MainaMind. The series transforms Spotify’s Blend feature into a playful exploration of musical chemistry, pairing participants to reveal shared tastes, compatibility and personal stories.

Across ten weekly episodes, each lasting 60 to 90 seconds, Maina goes on “dates” with a rotating cast of musicians, creators and fans. Using Spotify Blend, the participants discover whether their music tastes align or diverge. Episodes are released on Instagram Reels and cross-posted to TikTok.
“Every episode is basically one big question: are we a vibe or are we a mess? We are using Spotify Blend to find out if two people are the perfect music match, and the honest reactions are the best part,” said Maina.
The timing of the series coincides with a noted rise in music-driven expressions of longing and romance. In Kenya, Spotify reports that playlists containing the word “yearn” increased by roughly 302% between 1 January and 4 February 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. Globally, the number of “yearn” playlists rose 170% over the same period.
Spotify Blend has become a popular tool for friends and couples to connect through shared listening. On 14 February 2025, global listeners spent a record number of hours on Blend, marking a 21% increase compared with 14 February 2024.
Each episode of The Blend Date concludes with a “score reveal”, after Maina and his guest respond to light-hearted, personality-led questions such as “your go-to cry song?” or “you’re late to a date, what’s playing in the car?” The series features episodes with Kenyan R&B artist Njerae, storyteller Wixx Mangutha, and Johannesburg-based creator King.grrrr (Kamogelo Motlhabane), among others.
The series encourages viewers to try Spotify Blend themselves with friends or partners to explore their own musical compatibility.
Episodes are available weekly on Instagram Reels and TikTok, with the first episode released today.
