Nigeria: Pretty Okafor re-elected as PMAN president
Veteran musician Pretty Okafor has retained his position as president of the Performing Musicians Employers’ Association Of Nigeria (PMAN) after securing reelection last week.
PMAN, established in 1984 by Christy Essien-Igbokwe and Sonny Okosun, serves as an umbrella organisation for Nigerian musicians operating under the Government Unions Act with the authority to oversee and regulate the music profession in the country.
Okafor, a former member of the 90s duo Junior and Pretty, took over the helm of PMAN in October 2014. He secured his re-election unopposed during the PMAN’s national conference in Lagos after receiving a total of 50 votes and will lead PMAN for another four years.
During his acceptance speech following the elections, Okafor revealed that he initially didn’t plan to run for re-election. However, he changed his decision when he realised that members were strongly supporting his candidacy.
Okafor attributed his unopposed re-election to his achievements in his previous tenure, which included building a solid structure and partnerships with radio stations and businesses like hotels.
Several other officials retained their positions, including Sunny Neji as first vice president, Zaaki Azzay as second vice president, Baba Ojonugwa JFO as treasurer, Michael Stevens (Ruggedman) as chairman of the media committee ex officio, Boniface Itodo (Aita Bonny) as general secretary and Fada Bem Paul (Bempee) as assistant general secretary. Lola Olamuyiwa was also officially inaugurated as the new governor of PMAN in Lagos State.
