Angola’s C4 Pedro dominates AFRIMMAs

Nigeria dominated the awards ceremony, which was hosted by comedians Basketmouth and Chipukeezy from Nigeria and Kenya respectively, while Angolan artist C4 Pedro walked away with the most trophies.

The organisers said they aimed to make this year’s ceremony bigger with longer performances.

Two new categories were added to the list of awards – Best Francophone Artist and Best Lusophone Artist. This has been seen as a step in the right direction, as Lusophone artists are rarely recognised at awards ceremonies both in Africa and the diaspora.

Nigerian artists ruled Sunday night’s ceremony, walking away with 12 awards from 29 categories. Most notable among them were Davido, Tiwa Savage and Falz.

Angolan artist C4 Pedro represented the Lusophone music market and put it on the map as he walked away with three awards. C4 Pedro has also been nominated in the Best African Act category at the MTV Europe Music Awards on 12 November. C4 Pedro’s compatriot Nsoki also received two awards on the night, giving Angola a grand haul of five trophies.

Babes Wodumo and Cassper Nyovest flew the South African flag high as they managed to walk away with one gong each.
