Judith Sephuma to stage career-spanning concert in Joburg
South African jazz and gospel singer Judith Sephuma is set to present a new live production titled Judith Sephuma Live in Concert on 4 July at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace.
Judith Sephuma.
The two-hour concert will feature a selection of Sephuma’s Afro-jazz repertoire, songs from her gospel catalogue, material from her recent album When Winter Fades, and newly written gospel compositions.
When Winter Fades was nominated for Best Jazz Album at the Metro FM Music Awards.
Sephuma, who has built a career across Afro-jazz and gospel music, said the concert reflects both aspects of her musical identity. She added that audience demand had influenced her decision to return to gospel material in a dedicated live format.
“Since my My Worship project in 2017, I have not returned to gospel in a dedicated way, even though I continue to receive messages from fans asking for it,” she said.
“I have heard those requests, and this concert is my way of responding, by bringing everything together in one experience.”
According to organisers, the concert will revisit songs associated with Sephuma’s earlier Afro-jazz recordings while also introducing new gospel material that has not previously been performed live.
The production is expected to focus on themes of reflection, celebration and personal storytelling, elements that have characterised much of Sephuma’s work throughout her career.
Judith Sephuma first gained prominence in South Africa’s jazz scene in the early 2000s and has since become known for blending Afro-jazz, soul and gospel influences in her recordings and live performances.
