Spotify adds video controls as platform expands features
Spotify has begun rolling out new user controls that allow listeners to disable video content across its platform, as the company continues to expand its offering beyond audio.
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek.
The update enables users to turn off music videos, video podcasts and looping visual features such as Canvas. The controls are being introduced for both individual users and Family Plan accounts, giving listeners greater flexibility over how they consume content.
In a statement, Spotify said the changes respond to varying user preferences. “More than 70% of Spotify users say more video content would enhance their experience on Spotify, but not every listener wants the same experience. By putting control directly in users’ hands, it’s now easier to switch without friction.”
New settings and functionality
The new features will appear under the “Content and Display” settings on mobile devices and within the “Display” section on desktop. Users will be able to toggle off:
- Music videos
- Video podcasts
- Canvas visuals (short looping video clips)
- All video content across the platform
Family Plan administrators will also be able to manage these settings for individual members. When video controls are disabled at the plan level, affected users will not be able to switch to video versions of songs or podcasts.
Rollout and availability
The rollout is taking place globally, although reports indicate the feature may not yet be available in all regions, including some parts of the United Kingdom.
The new controls expand on Spotify’s earlier introduction of Canvas in 2019, which added short looping visuals to tracks.
The update comes as Spotify positions itself as a broader “multi-content platform”, incorporating both audio and video formats. The company has recently increased its focus on video, including music videos and podcast content.
Despite this shift, Spotify said video remains a complementary feature rather than its primary offering.
“While we continue to expand our multi-format offerings, we see video as a complement to the content, not the core proposition, and these controls underscore our commitment to offering users a tailored experience,” the company said.
