SA: Nanette drops new single ahead of upcoming project
Rising singer-songwriter Nanette has released a new single, ‘Baggage’, marking the first offering from her forthcoming project Painfully Happy (Deluxe), scheduled for release in May 2026.

The track, released on 26 March, explores themes of emotional burden and personal growth, with a focus on self-reflection and the process of letting go. According to the artist, the song draws on broader life experiences rather than a single narrative.
“This song represents letting go of all the baggage that no longer serve you,” Nanette said. “‘Baggage’ is a commitment to choosing oneself and choosing better.”
Produced by Grammy-winning producer Andre Harris, the single blends contemporary R&B with soul influences. The production features a restrained, atmospheric sound, supporting a vocal delivery centred on introspection and clarity.
Nanette said the track developed organically during studio sessions with Harris. “Upon hearing the production, I wanted to write a song that spoke to something we can all relate to,” she said. “I was so hypnotised by the beat honestly, the song came naturally.”
She added that the collaboration marked a significant creative moment. “This was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of link-up and I had to make the most of it.”
The song’s lyrical themes extend beyond relationships, addressing emotional strain across different aspects of life. “The inspiration for the song came from feeling like a lot was weighing me down emotionally and I needed to let it go,” she said. “It’s a choice to stop letting love, people, work, anything become a type of baggage in your life.”
Nanette said the release reflects her ongoing artistic development. “I’m constantly evolving as an artist and a woman,” she said. “My sound is still distinct to who I am, but you hear the growth in my subject matter, my voice, the delivery of the lyrics.”
She added that she hopes the song resonates with listeners on a personal level. “I’d love for people to use this as a catalyst for positive change in their own lives. May this be the song that helps people choose themselves and love themselves, letting go of any and all baggage that might be holding them down.”
‘Baggage’ forms part of a broader body of work expected later in 2026, as Nanette continues to develop her sound and thematic focus.
