Nigerian music executive Bugwu Aneto-Okeke joins global Merlin board
Merlin, the global digital music licensing partner for independent labels and distributors, has announced its 2026 Board, bringing together leaders from 12 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and Oceania.
Nigerian music executive and M.A.D Solutions CEO Bugwu Aneto-Okeke is among Merlin board new members.
Among the newly elected members is Nigerian music executive Bugwu Aneto-Okeke of Measurable Accurate Digital Solutions (M.A.D Solutions), highlighting Africa’s growing influence in the independent music sector.
Merlin’s Board is elected by its membership, which represents tens of thousands of independent record labels, distributors, and rights holders worldwide. The organisation supports these members by negotiating digital licensing agreements and providing services that enable independent labels to operate at scale in the global music market.
Aneto-Okeke joins a mix of new and returning members, including Charles Caldas (Portugal), Manami Ogawa (Japan), Rachel Buswell (UK), and Sascha Lazimbat (Germany). Returning members continuing their service include Carlos Mills (Brazil), Chris Maund (Australia), Darius Van Arman (US), and Megan Jasper (US), among others. Dan Waite (UK) and Verónica Rojas (Mexico) have also been appointed as Board Observers.
“We are delighted to welcome our new Board Members, each of whom brings a unique and high-value perspective to Merlin,” Merlin CEO Charlie Lexton said. “Merlin’s dedication to delivering unique benefits and best-in-class deals is at the heart of our mission. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, our Board’s experience across markets and business types is an invaluable resource in ensuring we continue to deliver premium value to our members around the world.”
The organisation expressed appreciation for outgoing Board members, including Eniko Gallasz, Fer Isella, Michael Ugwu (Nigeria), and others, recognising their contributions to Merlin’s growth and the independent music sector.
Merlin operates as a not-for-profit entity, serving members without external investors. Its global membership spans over 70 countries and represents 15% of the global recorded music market. The organisation negotiates digital deals with major platforms such as Apple, Spotify, YouTube, Meta, and Canva, and collects a low 1.5% administrative fee to fund operations.
With Aneto-Okeke on the Board, Merlin gains strengthened representation from Africa, reflecting the continent’s expanding role in global independent music. The inclusion also signals Merlin’s continued commitment to diversity and the integration of insights from a broad range of markets and music ecosystems.
