Malawi: Five members of Eli Njuchi’s Hive Band killed in road accident
Malawi’s music community is in mourning following the deaths of five young musicians who were members of Afro-dance artist Eli Njuchi’s Hive Band. The musicians died in a road accident on 26 December at Senzani in Ntcheu District along the M1 Road while travelling to Lilongwe ahead of a scheduled performance.
Hive Band road manager Vincent Mkwinda is among the deceased.
Those who died were identified as drummer and sound engineer Raphael Chitsonga, guitarist MacFarlane Banda, road manager Vincent Mkwinda, pianist Wilfred Kapengule Jnr and vocalist Elivacy Myaba. The group was en route to Lilongwe for a concert Njuchi was due to host at the Bingu International Convention Centre.
The five were widely regarded as among the most talented and professional instrumentalists in Malawi’s live music scene, known for their technical skill, creativity and consistency on stage.
The deaths have prompted an outpouring of grief across the music industry. Singer Eliza Mponya shared an emotional message, writing: “Sleep peacefully my dear brothers.”
Musician Lawi described the incident as “a sad day for music in Malawi,” while award-winning artist Onesimus said the country, particularly the music industry, had lost giants. Bassist Obed Kananji wrote, “Dear God. What a loss to the music fraternity!” Guitarist Abraham Malinga added: “I don’t know how to process this.”
Following the accident, Njuchi announced the cancellation of the Hive Experience concert that was scheduled on 27 December to allow time for mourning. “During this difficult time, my priority is to allow space for mourning and to support the families, colleagues, and loved ones affected by this loss,” he said. “I am grateful for the understanding and compassion shown by our audience, partners, and supporters.”
President Arthur Peter Mutharika and First Lady Gertrude Mutharika also expressed their condolences, describing the deaths as a national tragedy. In a statement, the president said the musicians were “instrumental figures whose passion and artistry helped shape the soul of Malawi’s music industry”.
“Their passing is a devastating blow, not only to Eli Njuchi and the Musicians Association of Malawi, but to the very heart of our nation. It is a tragedy that leaves a void in our cultural fabric,” Mutharika said. He announced that the government would cover all funeral expenses to ensure the musicians are laid to rest with dignity.
The cause of the accident has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Elsewhere, Malawian musician Lulu cancelled a scheduled performance in Lilongwe following a separate road incident in which his vehicle sustained damage after hitting a pothole, resulting in two burst tyres. No injuries were reported in that incident.
In a separate development outside Malawi, Kenyan authorities are investigating a fatal road accident in Nyakach, Kisumu County, involving Ohangla musician Javan Mc Ajudo and his team, which resulted in the death of a boda boda rider. Witnesses alleged the vehicle was travelling at high speed before leaving the road. Further details are yet to be confirmed by police.
The deaths of the Hive Band members have renewed calls within Malawi’s creative sector for improved road safety, particularly for artists who frequently travel long distances for performances.
