BIMAs 2024: Linah Ngcobo, Mercy Pakela to receive Lifetime Achievement Awards
South African musicians Linah Ngcobo and Mercy Pakela will receive lifetime achievement recognition at the 2024 edition of the Basadi in Music Awards (BIMAs) in Johannesburg on 10 August.
Ngcobo and Pakela have shaped the South African music landscape with their talent, unwavering dedication, and lasting impact. Known as Ebony, Ngcobo is a captivating example of a multifaceted career. Before audiences as a pop icon, she honed her craft as a backing vocalist for various renowned local acts, which laid the groundwork for her own explosive solo career. With infectious music and electrifying tours, Ngcobo became the ultimate pop diva of the 1980s.
“I am humbled by this recognition,” Ngcobo said. “To me, it is a testimony of what God can do through someone. BIMAs’ recognition of women like myself, encourages me to persevere, be dedicated and never give up on using what God gave me – the strength and the power to use my voice to empower and uplift others. I am inspired to continue this journey to celebrate generations of women who paved the way, using music as a force for good.”
Ngcobo’s influence extended beyond the stage. Not only did she cater to a wider audience with a Tshitsonga album under her birth name, Linah Khama, but her entrepreneurial spirit shone through managing the careers of her husband, the legendary maskandi musician Ihhashi Elimhlophe, and their children’s music group, Amaponi. Today, Ngcobo’s life has taken a spiritual turn as she serves as the senior pastor at God’s Pearl Ministries. Her story is one of remarkable transformation, leaving an enduring legacy as a singer, businesswoman, and spiritual leader.
For her part, Pakela stormed the scene in the 1980s with her electrifying energy and infectious hits like ‘Ayashisa Amateki’. Nicknamed the ‘Queen of Pantsula’, Pakela’s powerful voice captivated audiences for decades.
Pakela said: “This Lifetime Achievement Award is deeply humbling and is a beautiful reminder of the transformative power music can have on lives, and a beacon of hope for aspiring female musicians everywhere. The recognition of my journey, and BIMAs’ commitment to celebrating women in music, proves that dedication and passion can pave the way for a lasting legacy. I am incredibly grateful to be a part of this incredible celebration of perseverance and artistry.”
Driven by a musical dream, Pakela embarked on a bold journey at 16, hitchhiking from Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) to Johannesburg. Undeterred, she found her footing, honing her talent and performing with established artists. In 1985, she released her debut album, and with her signature wacky style and electrifying performances, she became a force to be reckoned with. Over 30 years in the industry, Pakela continues to leave her mark. From chart-topping hits like ‘Ndizo Kulinda’ and ‘Taximan’ to stadium anthems like ‘Soccer City’, her music continues to resonate with fans across generations. She is a testament to dedication, passion, and the enduring power of music.
BIMAs CEO Hloni Modise-Matau said: “It’s an immense privilege to celebrate these legends, Mam’Linah Ngcobo and Mam’ Percy Pakela, while they are still here, to acknowledge their invaluable contributions not just to music, but to the very soul of South African culture. They are some of the voices that shaped our nation’s narrative, and it’s an honour to bestow upon them these Lifetime Achievement Awards.”
