Written and performed by Juma Mufasa, the song encapsulates a wistful emotion toward a love interest, soulfully blending Akan, West African pidgin, English and French.
Popular within the local alté circuit, Wanzam, whose professional career started four years ago, has worked with the likes of Black Sherif, DJay, Baaba J and Essilfie, among others. He is a resident DJ at Accra-based Guide Radio.
On how the song came about, Wanzam revealed that ‘Soba’ is the result of “endless synergy” between producer Lee Hendrix and Juma Mufasa, the artist, adding that the track’s soulful instrumentation inspired its storyline.
“‘Soba’ tells a story of a young lady whose beauty and character leave her suitor with a feeling akin to being drunk. This is a scenario we can all relate to. I will love to do this with him again and again without doubt,” Wanzam said.
The disc jockey adds that working with Juma Mufasa was a magical experience. “He [Mufasa] knew what he was about. Every line made sense,” Wanzam said, adding that the record heralds a new collection to be published in due course.
Behind a dozen singles and an EP, Juma Mufasa names global stars like Salif Keïta, Pierre Akendengué, Michael Jackson and Kendrick Lamar, among his technical models.
