Nigeria: Tems to host radio series on Apple Music 1
Nigerian singer-songwriter and producer Tems has announced a new biweekly series on Apple Music’s global live-streaming radio station Apple Music 1.
Tems.
Christened Leading Vibe Radio, the programme, which premieres on 2 April, will feature women and creatives finding their voice, shining a light on them globally.
Tems disclosed that the show’s title was inspired by a line from her 2018 single ‘Mr Rebel’. The inaugural episode of Leading Vibe Radio will see Tems, her manager Muyiwa and brother Tunji explore the singer’s childhood, creative process and musical persuasions.
“Leading Vibe is really what it says: leading the vibe and creating opportunities for people, creating an alternative, and helping people navigate life,” Tems said. “It’s helping people to become leaders, helping people to find their own voice, their own sound, their own thing, and to get the best of life.”
The ‘Crazy Tings’ singer added that the show also aligned with her vision of building communities of empowered women. “We need to be there for each other in a real way – and I think, for a long time, not just in music but also in life, women haven’t really had a community, a real type of understanding.
“It’s because most of the time women are pitted against each other. There always has to be one ‘top person.’ But imagine if we were all ‘top’ – then the standard of living would be better. I see it’s happening already because we’re all realising that we need each other. Nobody can do it alone.”
An Apple Music Up Next alumna, Tems is signed to Since ’93/RCA Records and is behind two EPs – For Broken Ears and If Orange Was a Place. She is up for the Best Global Music Performance Award at the 64th Grammys on 3 April for her vocal contribution to Wizkid’s global hit ‘Essence’.
