Fête de La Musique is a free music event that was designed to celebrate the universal language of music. The event organisers said that last year the event had gathered more than 8 000 people who thronged the streets of Newtown to witness a full-day programme of musical performances.
Taking place each year in France on the first day of the summer solstice, Fête de la Musique is part of the European country’s heritage portfolio, which is dedicated to support and advance cultural and artistic endeavours across multiple disciplines. The idea of organising the free music festival came from the late French composer Maurice Fleuret who had dreamt of a music festival where people from all walks of life could gather and enjoy music together on the streets. The first Fête de La Mustique was held in Paris in 1982.
Ever since, the festival has become an international phenomenon and is celebrated in more than 700 cities in 120 countries, including China, India, Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, the US and Japan
The full festival programme for Johannesburg is available on the on the Fête de La Musique official website.
