Call for scores: Composition competition in the US
The Ithaca College School of Music in New York is calling on composers around the world to submit scores for its International Heckscher Composition Prize competition.
The composer of the winning work will receive a cash prize of $1 000. The work will be performed as part of the Ithaca College Contemporary Ensemble concert at Ithaca College on 8 April. The performance will be livestreamed and the winner is welcome to attend the performance at Ithaca College in New York if so desired. The Heckscher Foundation will not provide travel and accommodation expenses.
This year, the competition will award the best work for solo instrument (one performer) to choose from the below list:
- Flute (doubl. Picc., alto, bass).
- Oboe (doubl. English horn).
- Trumpet (C or B-flat, doubling Picc.).
- Tuba.
- Percussion (any combination of instruments playable by one performer).
- Voice (soprano or mezzo-soprano).
- Violin.
Rules
- No electronics of any kind will be allowed and a performer may play ancillary instruments.
- The work’s duration must be maximum 20 minutes. Pieces submitted to the competition may have been previously performed, recorded or awarded other prizes.
Submission guidelines
- Submissions must be anonymous.
- Only one submission per composer will be accepted.
- Score and recording must show the title of the work only. Should any part of the composer’s name be legible on the score, recording or linked URLs, the entry will be disqualified.
- Entrants should use this link to submit composition materials.
- To submit materials, entrants should provide direct URLs to the following:
- Recording, audio or video (if available). For audio, MP3 is preferred.
- Score in PDF format (no other format will be accepted).
- Text or PDF document containing the entrant’s full name, address, telephone number and email address. This document should be labelled with the title of the composer’s piece with the words “contact info”, e.g.: "Mypiece-contactinfo.pdf".
Note: PDF, audio, video and text files should be uploaded on platforms such as Dropbox, Megaupload, or any hosting space, making sure that no part of the URL or linked page reveals the identity of the composer. The composer’s materials must be available at the provided URL until at least 1 April. Electronic submissions or links sent via email or any other method aside from the specified above will not be accepted.
The submission deadline is 1 February and the winning work will be announced via the Ithaca College Heckscher Competition website on 1 March. The winner will be contacted via email.
