Bio
Ntando Ngcapu – Pianist, Composer, and Creative Visionary
Ntando Ngcapu is a South African pianist and composer whose music speaks with the language of heritage and the voice of innovation. Born and raised in Soweto, Ntando grew up in a home filled with sound — from choral hymns to township jazz — and as the nephew of acclaimed South African musician Phinda Matlala, music became both inheritance and calling. His early sensitivity to melody and rhythm would later mature into a style that fuses deep emotional expression with harmonic sophistication and spiritual depth.
Early Development and Formation
Ntando’s musical journey began at the Soweto Youth Music Development Programme, under the guidance of Victor Koapeng, where he completed Grade 5 in Music. He later honed his skills at the National School of the Arts, forming his first jazz ensemble, and continued at the Tshwane University of Technology, where he deepened his craft in jazz theory, composition, and performance. These formative years grounded him in discipline, but also encouraged an adventurous spirit — one that would later define his artistic trajectory.
