Ghana: Yoyo Tinz Festival confirms dates, theme
The second edition of Yoyo Tinz Festival will be held at Terra Alta grounds in Accra, Ghana from 9 to 13 October.
The event, which will focus on dance as a theme, is intended at drawing attention to the often underrepresented elements of hip hop culture.
Terra Alta founder, Elizabeth Sutherland said: "We love what Yoyo Tinz has been doing, and we are happy to support this year’s festival. Terra Alta is all about providing space for artists who are committed to their form and this team does exactly that."
Commenting on why they are focusing on dance this year, Yoyo Tinz creative director Selorm Jay said: "When people hear the words hip hop, they immediately think rap music and not the other art forms of the culture. In order for us to educate and shine a light on the other elements of hip hop, each year we will focus on a relevant discipline within the culture, while still celebrating our love for all things hip hop on a smaller scale.
"This year the focus will be on dance as hip hop includes a wide variety of elements that we look forward to presenting to our fans and in years to come."
This year the festival will feature several dance-focused activities and a photo exhibition. The festival proggrame will run as follows:
- 9 October – An evening of short movies screenings and panel discussions.
- 10 October – A special screening of ‘Coz Ov Moni’.
- 11 to 13 October – Graffiti, video games, skateboarding, dance showcases, dance classes and musical performances.
The festival poster, which features a goat mascot in the middle of a breakdancing move, is a nod to the theme. The mascot is seen wearing the iconic ‘Black Stars’ jersey of the legendary Abedi Pele – a reflection that the festival, like Pele, is the "Greatest of All Times."
