SA house musician Nichume is dead
South African house artist Nichume Siwundla has passed on.
Nichume, who was known for featuring on Mobi Dixon’s 2017 ‘Bhutiza’ hit, was found dead at a friend’s place last night following a suspected suicide.
"I'm distraught,” fellow singer Mobi Dixon said. “I will remember Nichume as a bright light at Top Chap Media where we signed her. She was not only my first artist, but we had grown so close in the past three years that she became my little sister. She truly is gone too soon. May her soul rest in peace.”
The deceased’s brother Qamani Siwundla said: “We, as a family are in absolute shock as to what has happened. Learning that your sister has succumbed to emotions and taken her own life can never rest well.
“We obviously are left with a lot of questions but also know that she had one of the strongest characters in the family. Whatever she was feeling at that moment triggered immense hopelessness. We stand united as a family during this difficult time. Nichume was so loved and appreciated. We're proud of all her achievements."
Messages of condolences are pouring on social media.
Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthetwa wrote on Twitter: “We're deeply saddened by the tragic passing of a shining star and celebrated musician Nichume Refeloe Siwundla, a talented daughter of the soil whose lovely voice reverberated in our hearts and gifted us lasting memories. We send our deepest sympathies to her loved ones.”
The Department of Arts and Culture also wrote: “We are deeply saddened to hear the tragic news of the untimely passing of house vocalist and upcoming music star Nichume Siwundla. Well known for her feature on the hit song, Bhutiza, Nichume had a talent our nation will truly miss. May her soul rest in peace.”
Nichume was an accomplished musician and a qualified ophthalmologist. She reached the heights of her fame when she featured on ‘Bhutiza’. She also featured on such singles as ‘Daydreaming’ and ‘Far Away.’
Following the success of ‘Bhutiza’, she was signed to Top Chap Media.
